2016 and 2017 were, among other things, the years of The Brow. Brows were everywhere. I feel like every second picture on IG and the make-up groups I follow on FB was of brows.
While I love big, natural brows (think Cara Delevinge) I don't have them. Mine are...meh. Not very thick, not particularly defined. There are no IG Brows here, and that's OK because sometimes it's a bit too much. For most of us we're stuck with the brows God gave us, and they ain't like what we see in the media or on the internet.
My brows were a constant source of frustration for me for years. Like most people my age I over-plucked as a teenager and made a small problem worse. That coupled with a bad experience in a French Sephora where the lady scalped my brows has left me with only decent ones. It took me about two years to grow them back after the scalping, and even now they barely look related, never mind like sisters. My left brow is much slimmer than the right and I have to even that out with product as I have no intention of reshaping them myself and would be hesitant to let anyone do it after the Sephora disaster.
For the last few years my brows have been an after-thought. I was using a couple of Korean brow products (Tony Moly Auto Eyebrow Pencil, and something from Etude House but I can't remember the name - they were both very similar) and didn't bother to pick up anything new as I'm not the best at doing brows anyway. But I was on @venteprivee before Christmas getting presents and in their beauty section was a MakeUp Forever sale with the Aqua Brow Kit, which costs around €40 at Sephora, for €15. I was running out of my Tony Moly pencil, so I picked it up.
The kit comes with a mini brow brush for applying the product, a mini brow spoolie, the product itself which comes in a tiny squeeze tube, all housed in a handy net zip-close bag.
You get 7ml of product in the tube, and while you may think that's not a lot, keep in mind that it's a brow product and you really only need the tiniest bit. I love the little brush and spoolie - which is odd as I usually dislike minis of anything - they work perfectly with the product. The little bag is great as it allows you to keep the three together, and obviously it's perfect for travelling. I'm the worst with minis and always lose them, but I've had this for a month now and thanks to the little bag it's all still together.
When I say that you need the tiniest bit, I mean the size of a pinhead or smaller. Even if you're someone with bigger brows than me, I'd start with a small amount and squeeze out more if you need it - it would be tricky to get the product back into the packaging and you don't want to waste it.
The formula is a creamy gel, very spreadable, very blendable and relatively easy to work with if you use as little as possible and build it up. My main brow concerns are giving some definition and colour, and this is just perfect. I usually start with a small amount on the back of my hand, dip the brush in, wipe off any excess and start by defining my under-brow line. Then, and this is the important part, just keep brushing it through. Add a bit, brush it through, add some more and repeat - I've found that this is the best way to apply, especially if, like myself, you're not a brow artist.
This product both gives you colour and hold, and it lasts all day. I generally end up wearing my make-up for 8 plus hours and at the end of the day even if my base and eyes have faded, the brows are still strong. It's extremely easy to remove with any cream or oil-based cleanser so you don't have to scrub at your brows. And it will probably last for at least a year.
All in all? A winner. I'm not going to go crazy and say that this is the best brow product ever, my experience with brow products is minimal, but if you're relatively comfortable with doing your brow make-up and want to switch from a pencil to a gel formula, I highly recommend it. It's a lovely product for those of us who just want to tidy up and define sparse brows, and I've seen people on YouTube and IG using it for more picture perfect brows, so looks like it works for both looks.
Is it worth the full price? I would say yes. Even though it's not cheap at €40, when you take into account that it's a set and contains everything you need for your brows then it's pretty good. And if you enjoy it you won't have to buy another brow product for ages. You can also buy just the gel for €22.95 in Sephora if you already have good brow tools, and I think that's a bargain. Makeup Forever is actually a great brand and I don't use enough of their stuff - I have one of their Aqua Cream Eyeshadows and it's the best cream shadow formula I've ever used, it's extremely creamy and long-wearing and I've had it for well over a year and it hasn't dried out yet.
What are you using on your brows at the moment?
Have a great week everyone!
